Week One
(Classes meet four times per week due to a rotating/dropped period in the regular schedule)
What's the Matter? -50 minutes- This day will be used as an introduction to Matter, properties, elements, compounds, mixtures, solutions, suspensions and colloids.
A Physical Attitude - 50 minutes-This day will be spent continuing with matter, briefly reviewing what was introduced the previous lecture, than introducing physical properties. Most of this period will be spent working on the first lab of the unit where students will be working with different stations each set up with some sort of mixture or substance and a mini experiment.
Everything Changes - Day 3- 80 minutes- This period will be used to finish up with the separation lab and will also be used to review and understand what the lab was showing, physical properties and different forms of matter will be discussed and examined.(mixtures, substances, etc). This lesson will also be used to transition into chemical properties.
Chemical Properties- 80 Minutes- During this class students will be using a candle during a short lab to investigate chemical properties and changes, the difference between physical and chemical properties, and changes. Students will be using a KWL to help them organize the information they already know in addition to what they want to and actually learn. The CSI lab will be introduced.
Week Two: CSI Lab Day -80 Minutes
After having spent some time working with and learning about properties of matter and different types of changes, students will be given an opportunity to apply what they have learned through performing a full length comprehensive lab. This CSI type lab will be a fun activity for students to connect what they've been learning in class to situations they might find interesting.
CSI Lab Recap -50 Minutes- This period will be used for students to complete the second half of the CSI Lab, and also will be a day for students to share their conclusions with their classmates. The class will discuss who was the murderer, how they came to those deductions, and we will talk about how this would relate to a scientists role in solving a real life crime.
Review Session- 50 Minutes- This period will be a day of reviewing for the test on the unit. Students will be able to ask any questions, make sure they have all necessary study materials, and will be participating in a game of Science Jeopardy that will give the winning team an opportunity for a few extra credit points on the test.
Exam Day-50 Minutes- This entire period will be used for the unit assessment.
